Shortly after going into service with the first squadrons in 2002 it was flying successful combat missions during Operation Enduring Freedom and in Iraq. By the use of JDAM and laser-guided bombs it can attack enemy targets much more accurately and also has an extensive arsenal of guided missiles of the latest generation. The F/A-18E is in practice a completely new aircraft: the whole fuselage is 30% larger than that of the F/A-18C. Further modifications include more powerful engines, 33% more fuel capacity and a longer range. The operating radius when on the attack is 40% greater than that of its predecessor. 8 tonnes of weapons and fuel tanks together with ECM pods can be carried on 11 hardpoints.
